To the Bride Who Has No Idea What She Wants for Her Wedding Makeup…
The years I’ve spent working as a Makeup artist has taught me many things, and I would say one of the most important is that not many brides are completely sure of what they want for their wedding makeup.
There is a small percentage who know exactly what they want, but there is a much larger group who come to me looking for guidance :)
And believe it or not all of them know what they don’t want and I love that!
Because once you’re sitting in my chair, after asking different questions and having a conversation, you are often the one who ends up guiding mem towards finding your style.
So how does this happen?
It Starts With Obervation
Being a makeup artist for a bride requires observation, good listening, and especially a little bit of intuition.
But more than anything, it happens through interaction. The more we talk, the more I begin to understand your vision, even when you may not have the words to describe it yet.
That is one of the reasons why the bridal trial is one of the most important parts of the bridal experience.
It gives us the opportunity to explore, communicate, make adjustments, and discover what feels like you.
Inspiration Pictures Are Important
I’ve noticed that some makeup artist dislike when brides bring inspiration pictures, especially when so many brides happen to bring the same AI-generated image of a model.
Yes, this happens often!
But when a bride brings me a photo that is clearly altered, filterd, or heavily photoshopped, my favorite question is:
“What do you like about this picture and why?”
I don’t need the picture to be realistic or even achievable exactly as it appears.
What matters to me is understanding what caught your attention.
Maybe it’s the soft eye makeup. Maybe it’s the skin. Maybe it’s the lashes, the lip color, the overall feeling, or simply the way the makeup makes the bride look.
From that, I can almost begin to understand where you want to go with your vision.
Your Personal Style Helps a Ton
When I talk about your personal style, I’m not only talking about your makeup.
I’m also thinking about your dress, your hair, your venue, and sometimes even the season you’ve chosen to get married.
All of these details reveal so much about your personality and the feeling you want for your wedding day.
Are you a romantic bride? Traditional? Adventurous? Maybe more minimalist?
Your makeup doesn't exist on its own. It becomes part of the bigger picture.
And when I understand that picture, it becomes much easier to create a look that feels cohesive and, most importantly, feels like you.
Communication Is So Important
Your bridal trial is your opportunity to express your wishes to your makeup artist.
If you aren't sure what you want, I want to know what you don't want.
Pointing out specific things that you love, things you want to avoid, and areas that you'd like to highlight or perhaps conceal gives me a much clearer picture of what you desire.
This is collaborative work, and I want you to be as honest as possible without worrying that you will hurt my feelings.
I would much rather make the changes during your trial than have you wonder about them later.
Your honesty helps me do my job better.
How I Help Guide the Process
I like to reach out at least three months before the wedding to schedule your bridal trial.
When you come to my studio, we chat about all things bridal and beauty and how to marry your makeup with your own features and your overall wedding theme in the most flawless way.
We talk about your skin type, the way you usually wear your makeup, and, if you rarely wear makeup, what your favorite features of your face are.
From there, we create a plan together.
My goal isn't to put you into a specific bridal makeup category.
My goal is to understand you and create something that feels beautiful, intentional, and authentic to you.
The Beauty Is in the Becoming
I also like to say: trust the process.
I know there can be so much expectation surrounding your wedding makeup. You may have saved hundreds of pictures, imagined how you'll look walking down the aisle, and built up a very specific idea in your head — even if you can't quite explain what that idea is.
But don't forget that a trial is teamwork.
Try not to judge the makeup until it is completely finished. Makeup is a process, and sometimes you need to see the entire look come together before you can truly understand how it feels.
And remember, it's not just about creating beautiful makeup.
It's about creating a result that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and like the most beautiful version of yourself.
So, if you're the bride who has no idea what she wants for her wedding makeup, take a breath.
You don't have to have all the answers.
You just have to be willing to communicate, explore, and trust the process.
We'll figure it out together
