Eastern Women vs. Western Women: A Makeup Style Comparison

The second half of the year has already started and while I’m sitting in front of the beautiful ocean I would like to write about my take on the eastern and western makeup ideals.

One thing different this year is that Asian women have been liking my work. Knowing that my style resonates with other cultures gives me such a sense of gratitude and motivation. One of the things that I am always looking for is to be able to do makeup on all kinds of women and this is because I personally feel that beauty is influenced by factors beyond race and culture, that’s what makes my job anything but boring. For this reason, I cannot help to feel excited about my Asian American brides!

The Asian American woman – I know this is a broad term- but when I say this, I refer to the women born in the US but from an eastern Asian generation. Their standards of beauty are very different to the culture where the western women come from. It’s not a surprise that eastern Asian women prioritize their skin care and this is just something that I love! So the experience with Asian brides has really been phenomenal. They prefer an undetectable contour, less bright concealer and a more makeup no makeup style.

The western women instead prefer more sculpted features, contouring, highlighting, and more glamorous. I’ve often found myself caught between these two different approaches to makeup, but these styles have definitely shaped the way I see beauty.

Beauty is subjective and a matter of personal taste and my job as a makeup artist is to make my client feel like themselves without changing their style and way to feel comfortable. Chana has the perfect canvas, but all she wanted was a soft eye with minimal shading, a subtle wing to elongate eyes and very natural lipstick, with a skin-like finish foundation, a soft understated makeup vibe. She emphasizes that she didn’t want lipliner or long lashes, she calls it a natural glam that will still look like her. To translate her vision to reality I focused on her skin first, working for a natural youthful appearance but with subtle enhancements. She was so happy when everything came together and “That glow when they love their look — nothing better. 💄✨”

Take care and enjoy every moment of this beautiful season, stay radiant! 💛✨
