Do you do all skin tones?

The beginning of Spring is finally here and with that Wedding season! This year I finally decided to showcase my work at a Wedding expo! It was definitely a milestone, since I never done one, so I’m so happy I did it! If you follow me you’ll see the latest reel I made about my experience as a newbie.

While meeting some brides at the expo I was asked by several of them if I could do makeup on all skin tones. My response was always - Absolutely! Being a makeup artist in my country Colombia there is so much diversity you have to! So being able to work on different skin tones here in the US not only makes it enjoyable but it empowers my art.

I like that brides ask this question because it tells me they understand that not getting the right foundation will definitely ruin a well executed eye and lip makeup. Don’t forget that the second step to show a beautiful makeup is always to wear the right foundation. You really don’t want to see product or look like you are wearing a mask.

The first step? You know it… Take care of your skin and skin prep!

Do I have all the Foundation Shades?

Let me start by saying that we are lucky to have the variety of products we have these days with different finishes, coverage and tones, check Let’s Talk Foundation! - Rosalia Sewell Makeup  however, it’s still very easy to get it wrong for somebody that doesn’t know what to look for when trying to find the right shade. The answer is no, I don’t have all the shades. I carry some favorite foundations in several tones but I also have adjusters.

What are adjusters?

Adjusters come in cream or liquid form, they are color pigments that will perfectly fine tune your shade when mixing in with your foundation.

For example, if the closest foundation I have for my client has more of a red undertone than her natural skin, I can add a drop of green adjuster to neutralize it and match it better to her skin. Sometimes that’s all I need it really works like a miracle.

Adjusters are also great to remove the ashy appearance that some foundations can give to deeper complexions. If I blend only a small amount of yellow or red adjusters to a deeper skin, it will give it more richness and luminosity erasing the ashyness. As an artist I understand that we are not just one tone, for this reason to guarantee a good foundation match it requires knowledge of color. We call it color theory which is the guide or set of principles that tell us how colors behave when mixed.

A professional makeup artist should be able to work on all skin tones. Always ask and check their work or if you want to be 100% sure have a makeup trial.

Happy Planning!
