Are You Wearing the Wrong Foundation Shade? Let’s Fix That…

Last month, while I was waiting to get my nails done, I had one of those beauty artist moments.

You know the ones… where your eye instantly zooms in on someone’s makeup.

The sweet woman at the front desk was chatting with me about how excited she was for spring—sunshine, warmer weather, fresh starts. Meanwhile, my brain was doing something completely different:

“Is her foundation too warm? Too dark? Is it oxidizing … or is she just trying to look sun-kissed?” Because if that’s the goal, there’s a much better way to achieve it.

When you work in beauty, you notice everything. And when you care, you want to help… without making anyone feel uncomfortable.

After going back and forth in my head, I decided to gently say something. When she told me what foundation she was using, it clicked instantly:
It was the wrong shade.

So let’s talk about it—because this happens ALL the time.

That orange look? It’s one of the most common foundation mistakes, and there are a few reasons why it happens:

  • The shade is too warm for your undertone

  • The shade is too dark

  • Or your foundation is oxidizing (yes, your skin’s oils and pH can actually change the color!)

So how do we fix it?

Let me guide you like I would one of my brides 🤍

Those bright beauty store lights are not your friend. They can trick you into thinking a shade matches until you step outside and suddenly…orange.

What to do instead:

1. Always check your foundation in natural light. Walk outside, use your phone camera, double check. This step alone will save you.

2. Test More Than One Shade

Don’t settle on the first “almost match.”

Try a few options and compare them. The right shade should disappear into your skin—not sit on top of it

3. Don’t Forget About Concealer

Concealer is just as important as foundation.

If it’s too light, especially under the eyes, it can turn gray or ashy—and nobody wants that.

Quick fixes:

  • Use a slightly deeper concealer or…

  • Use a color corrector before applying your concealer:

Fair skin, light peach color corrector cancels blue/purple tones

Medium to deep skin, orange or red correctors work beautifully

Bring Your Skin Back to Life

Here’s something I always tell my brides:

Foundation alone can make your face look flat—even if it’s the perfect shade.

That’s where the magic comes in ✨

  • Bronzer: Adds warmth and dimension (apply around the perimeter of your face)

  • Blush: Place it on the apples of your cheeks and blend upward for a lifted look

  • Highlighter: A little goes a long way—it gives you that healthy, radiant look

Even when your foundation is a perfect match, it’s the finishing touches that make everything come alive.

✨ I help brides and everyday beauties achieve flawless, natural-looking skin that actually matches in every light.

True luxury makeup doesn’t mask—it elevates.

Tell me—have you ever been a victim of the “orange foundation” struggle? 👀
