HER Skin Prep: Hydration, Enlivenment and Radiance
My first bride of the month of May. Loved creating this look for her special day✨Everything ran perfectly on time, the energy in the room felt calm and joyful, and the weather could not have been more beautiful for a walk through one of the most stunning venues to begin the day.
Nature was already doing its part — everything else was simply the finishing touch.
That’s exactly how I see makeup. Makeup is the cherry on top, but healthy, glowing skin is what truly builds the look underneath it all.
Why Skin Preparation Matters
Beautiful makeup always starts with beautiful skin preparation. Every professional makeup artist has their own method, but for me, there are three essential elements that create the perfect canvas:
H.E.R. Skin Prep
Hydration
Enlivenment
Radiance
These are the foundations of long-lasting, glowing makeup.
Hydration: The First Essential Step
Hydration is always my number one priority.
On a wedding day, I use multiple nourishing steps to deeply hydrate the skin. Serums are one of my favorite tools because they penetrate the skin effectively, helping it feel healthy, balanced, and ready for makeup longevity.
When the skin is hydrated, makeup sits more beautifully and lasts throughout the day.
Enlivenment: Bringing Skin to Life
The second step is enlivenment — stimulating and awakening the skin.
You’ll often see me using different tools or simply my hands to gently massage the neck, face, and shoulders. This encourages lymphatic drainage, boosts circulation, and naturally revives the complexion.
Healthy circulation creates that fresh, energized glow no foundation can imitate.
Radiance: The Final Glow
Radiance is the finishing touch.
I love using a blend of body oils and non-transfer liquid highlighters on the décolletage and shoulders to create a soft, luminous glow that photographs beautifully.
Don’t Stop at Your Jawline
So many people focus only on the face and completely forget about the neck and chest area. The skin on the neck is thinner and contains fewer oil glands than the face, making it more prone to dryness and dehydration.
Your glow should continue beyond your face.
You don’t necessarily need a separate neck or décolletage cream.
Whatever skincare you apply to your face — vitamin C, antioxidants, moisturizer, and sunscreen — simply bring it down to your neck and chest as well.
Your skin will thank you later.
Don’t Forget to Exfoliate
Exfoliation is another key step in achieving polished, radiant skin.
There are two types of exfoliation:
Physical exfoliation — scrubs with fine gritty particles
Chemical exfoliation — acids that dissolve dead skin cells
Choose an exfoliator with a gentle, micro-fine texture that suits your skin type and removes dead skin cells without damaging your skin barrier.
How to Exfoliate Properly
Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and rinse thoroughly.
Apply an eye cream to protect the delicate eye area.
Apply your exfoliator. One of my favorites is lactic acid because it exfoliates while also hydrating the skin.
Finish with a moisturizer.
Important:
Only exfoliate at night and always wear sunscreen the following day.
Beauty Starts With Lifestyle
Last but not least, your daily habits play a huge role in your skin health.
Never underestimate the power of:
Quality sleep
Movement and exercise
A healthy, nourishing diet
These habits create the best environment for healthy, glowing skin — long before makeup is ever applied.
Because true beauty begins beneath the makeup.
